Clinical trials, or research studies, are crucial to advancing medicine and answering scientific questions that help make progress in the prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions and diseases. People who take part in clinical trials and research contribute to advancing medicine and increasing knowledge in healthcare. Participation in research and clinical trials may also be able to access treatments not available to everyone and receive state of the art care from experts. Dr. Crawford is known world wide for his contributions to genitourinary research and advancements in prostate care. Current studies that Dr. Crawford is participating in are listed below.
- EDAP HIFU: The Ablatherm-HIFU Phases II/III clinical study is currently enrolling men diagnosed with clinical stage T1a, b or c or T2a localized prostate cancer. HIFU is a noninvasive therapy using highly focused ultrasound energy to ablate the prostate tissue.
- Targeted Focal Therapy (TFT): The Application of Target Cryotherapy in the Treatment of Organ Confined Prostate Cancer is a new approach for management of early stage, organ-confined prostate cancer. TFT treats only the area of cancer in the prostate to preserve quality of life by minimizing negative side effects from treatment.
- Mapping Biopsy: Real-time reconstruction of the prostate gland based on step imaging of the prostate in the transperineal plane. With the use of our state of the art software which renders the images in 3D.
- Prostate Cancer Awareness Week (PCAW): In addition to screening millions of men during PCAW, the Prostate Conditions Education Council participates in new research and technology development to help advance the treatment and detection of prostate cancer. Screenings during Prostate Cancer Awareness Week have yielded valuable research results PCAW data analysis.
- Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): PDT as alternative modality for treating prostate cancer. Evaluating photodynamic effects on the prostate gland and its adjacent tissues.
- Dutasteride: The effect of dutasteride on prostate cancer volume.
- MIST Trial: Phase II/III efficacy of Botox in the treatment of BPH.
- CAMUS Trial: NIH trial for BPH treatment.
- DEGARELIX: The use of Degarelix (LHRH antagonist) in prostate cancer.
- PCA3 Biomarker: Prospective clinical validation of urinary PCA3 as a marker for early prostate cancer detection.
- BOTOX: Intraprostatic Injection of Botulinum Toxin for the Management of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia; Phase I trial to test the safety and efficacy of a novel drug (Botox) for the treatment of obstructive lower urinary symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia.
- SCORE: Salvage Cryotherapy in Recurrent Prostate Cancer (SCORE) To provide a systemic, uniform and user-friendly tool for collection of data on prostate cancer salvage cryotherapy in a multicenter setting. The goal is to learn more about the short and long term efficacy and safety of this procedure. Ultimately the data analysis will serve as a robust guidance instrument for improving upon the utilization of this procedure for the treatment of patients with recurrent (LRD) prostate cancer.
- University of Colorado Cancer Center Clinical Trials: Advances in medicine come from new ideas developed through clinical research.
